Home Design Trends: Teal

A Rising Tide

Incorporating teal into home design has become increasingly popular in the past few years. If you use Pinterest, you’ll see teal anywhere from wall colors and backsplash tile to kitchen cabinets and more. Just last week, Sherwin Williams announced that the 2018 Color of the Year is a refreshing shade of teal called Oceanside SW 6496. Describing the color as a “multi-dimensional, marine-inspired look” Sherwin Williams asserts that Oceanside can evoke a “multitude of moods and associations depending on hue, shade, and application.”

Psychology of Color

Color is a powerful design tool, as it can dramatically command the energy of a room. Because teal is a combination of both blue and green, teal’s energy reflects a mix of the two colors. Green is known for growth and renewal, while blue evokes feelings of calm and freshness. Together, the two colors create teal, which emits a perfect blend of calm and soothing energy, as well as a feeling of restoration and renewal.

Both blue and green have light wavelengths, which have a soothing effect on our eyes. The calming energy, mixed with soothing effects, makes teal a great color to use in spaces where you wish to relax and unwind. Consider incorporating the color into spaces such as the living room, bedroom, reading nook, and bathroom.

Make A Splash

Too much of one color can create an overwhelming feeling, especially when the color is new to your space. When incorporating color into your home, it’s a good idea to start small. Here are a few ways that you can add a splash of color to your living spaces:

Add a punch of color by painting one wall of a room. This is a great way to add a focal point, without going overboard on color. Remember, lighting can have a significant impact on how the color looks. Be sure to test a small paint sample at various times during the day and in artificial light before you commit to a color.

Decor, Furniture, and Accessories

If painting a whole wall seems like too big of a commitment, consider adding a piece of decor, furniture, or accessories that feature the color teal. Start by adding a splash of color with decorative pillows, furniture, or artwork.

Pillows, rugs, and throw blankets are a quick and easy way to add a touch of color to living areas. There are endless options of patterns, so you’re guaranteed to find something that matches your personal style.

While it will cost you a bit more, furniture can also be a fun way to bring color into a room. Depending on your taste and fondness for color, you could choose to incorporate anything from a large couch to a small ottoman or paint your dresser teal to bring a bright and cheery atmosphere to your bedroom or closet.

Like pillows, wall art is also a quick and easy way to transform a room. However, artwork can vary in price range, with more unique pieces costing a pretty penny. While this may be the case, there are more affordable options—like screen prints—that are both beautiful and budget-friendly.

It’s no secret that plants are a great addition to any home. Beyond providing living beauty, houseplants also bring with them many health benefits including air purification, stress reduction, improved mental wellbeing, and a calming atmosphere. While plants are generally various shades of green, you can add a pop of teal with your pot.
