Crisis Center of Johnson County

Crisis Center 2017 Hunger Banquet

When: Thursday, June 8, 6:30 pm | Where: Sheraton, Downtown Iowa City

Join us for The Crisis Center of Johnson County’s first Hunger Banquet, a unique event that gives participants a taste of the impact of hunger in Johnson County, on Thursday, June 8, 2017. Registration begins at 5:30 and the program will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton in downtown Iowa City. Attendees at each table will be randomly assigned to represent a specific income level within Johnson County, which will determine the meal they will receive. Some guests (roughly 4%) representing upper income will receive steak and lobster; while others (roughly 14%) representing the percentage of food insecure individuals locally, will receive no meal. So we encourage our guests to come prepared to experience a variety of different meal possibilities (and income levels), which could include no dinner at all.

Throughout the evening, guests will hear speakers discuss the prevalence of hunger in the local community, the impact, and ways attendees can help support hunger efforts. Our keynote speaker is Barbie Izquierdo, a nationally known anti-hunger advocate who was featured in the 2012 documentary A Place at the Table, where she talked about the barriers she’s faced to getting assistance, and the challenges of feeding her two children. A cash bar will be available.

Tickets for the Hunger Banquet must be purchased in advance (click here) and do not guarantee a meal
