Welcome to your new home in your new neighborhood! Maybe you chose the greater Iowa City area for work or perhaps for school, or it may be that you have family in the area. Whatever your reason for moving here, we’re glad you did! We truly love our hometown and hope that you will, too.
Of course part of loving your community is feeling like it truly is yours. When you’re new to town developing that feeling of belonging can take some time. Here are some ideas of things you can try to “find your tribe.”
- Join a club. There are lots of local groups that will welcome you. Check out the local library or try meetup.com to learn about the variety of clubs that are in our area. What do you like to do? Garden? Read? Quilt? Geocache? Fly model airplanes? You name it, it’s pretty likely we have it.
- Urban Acres REALTORS® and staff spend a lot of their time volunteering because we enjoy giving back to our communities. There are tons of opportunities, whether serving on a board or ushering at a local event or helping at the many nonprofits we have. It’s a great way to meet people, and learn about what makes our towns tick.
- Learn! We’re lucky to have lots of opportunities to learn in the greater Iowa City area. Taking classes through Kirkwood Community College, or taking advantage of the many free programs the University of Iowa offers are two great ways to learn. The city recreation centers, too, have lots of offerings from which to choose.
- Spend time outside. It’s amazing who you’ll meet when you’re outdoors. Do some yardwork (or pot some pretty flowers if you don’t have a yard), stroll around your neighborhood or register for fundraising walks (there are lots!), take the kids (or the dog!) to the local park.
Midwestern hospitality is a real thing and it’s alive and well in the Iowa City area. Share your hobbies and interests with your REALTOR® and she or he will likely have some great suggestions, too!
